Library groups meet at the Newton Free Library, 330 Homer Street, Newton Centre, unless otherwise noted. All meetings are free and open to the public.

African Literatures Discussion Group

African Literatures Discussion Group, led by Anne Serafin, explores the rich variety of writings from Africa. The group usually meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:30 pm in Room A. Info contact: Anne Serafin at 617-527-1072. Next Meeting: December 17 to discuss Arrow of God, the third novel by Chinua Achebe of Nigeria.

Children's Book Writers Group

Children's Book Writers Groups are for writers who have work in progress. Pre-registration required: Maria Gianferrari (781-891-0153) leads the group that meets on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 pm in Room A. Next meeting: Monday, December 1. Karen Day (617-244-4830) leads the group that meets on the 4th Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm in Room A. Next meeting: Wednesday, December 17 in the Newton Room (date and location have been changed for December due to the Christmas holiday).

 

Contemporary Books Discussion Group

Contemporary Books Discussion Group holds meetings on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 pm in Room A. Info contact: Marilyn Miller at 617-332-4225. Next Meeting: Wednesday, December 3 to discuss A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. In January the group will discuss Scottsboro by Ellen Feldman.

Fiction Writing Group

Fiction Writing Group is a workshop for published writers and writers who are seriously pursuing publication. Members' short stories (or novel excerpts) are read, discussed, and critiqued by workshop members, roundtable style, with the goal of improving each writer's work. The group facilitator is Michael Berlyn, author of four novels. Pre-registration is required. Registration contact: Muffy at 561-386-4258. Please call before attending. New! Genealogy Club
Genealogy Club is for novice and experienced researchers who want to share information on records and approaches for starting or extending their genealogical searches. Great Books Discussion Group

Great Books Discussion Group participants read and discuss books from the Great Books Foundation (most of which are available at the library). Info contact: Ruth Greene at 617-527-4143. The group usually meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:15 pm in Room A. Next Meeting: Tuesday, December 9; bring a favorite poem, passage or saying to read to the group.

Newton Camera Club

New! Retirement Planning Club for Women

Retirement Planning Club for Women, provides instruction on how to use library financial and investment resources and allows access to the FINRA (Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) educational resources. Led by a volunteer facilitator, Club participants usually meet on the third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Druker Auditorium to learn about and review resources, talk about drafting their financial retirement plan goals, hear speakers and network with other women. To join the club, come to a monthly meeting or register online at www.newtonfreelibrary.net. Next meeting: Wednesday, December 17; Deb Bloomberg from the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, will present a program called Money, Banking, Credit and Identity Theft. Please consider bringing a younger friend to introduce her to the Club. This program is made possible by a grant from the FINRA Investor Foundation through Smart Investing@ your Library®, a partnership with the American Library Association.

 

Sequences: Women Tell Our Stories Group
Sequences: Women Tell Our Stories, a supportive, creative group has been meeting for nine years to read fiction, essays or poetry and discuss and write responses to the material. Led by Robin Mayer Stein, poet and journalist, the goal of the group is to have fun and experience literature in a congenial atmosphere. The group usually meets on the second Wednesday of the month at 10:00 am in Room A. Next meeting: Wednesday, December 10.
Short Story Discussion Group
Short Story Discussion Group usually holds its meetings on the 2nd Monday of the month at 7:30 pm in Room A. The group is led by Dotty Gonson and Frannie Moyer; both of whom taught at Newton South High School. Info contact: Dotty at 617-547-3833 or email drgonson@comcast.net. Next meeting: Monday, December 8 to discuss Flannery O'Connor's A Good Man is Hard to Find from The Complete Stories, Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York, 1977 and James Joyce's The Boarding House, from the Penguin Edition, published in 1995.
Singing Group
Singing Group is for singers of all levels who enjoy singing classical and popular music. It usually meets monthly on Saturdays, at 12 noon in the Druker Auditorium. Info contact: coordinator Miriam Simen at 617-244-6705. Next Meeting: Saturday, December 13.
  New! The Waban Book Group
The Waban Book Group welcomes all to participate. Info contact: Edith White 617-527-8253. The group usually meets on the last Wednesday of the month at 10:30 am in Room A. The group will not meet in December.
Women in Career Transition
Women in Career Transition. Led by career counselor Joyce Picard, this group, in its fourth year, provides sharing and information for women in career transition. It focuses on goals, allowing time to share concerns and gain support. The group usually meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 pm in Room A. Next meeting: Tuesday, December 16.
