About the ESL Program

  • A Legacy for Literacy  +-
  • A Legacy for Literacy is a free award-winning ESL/Literacy program brought to you by the Newton Free Library. Our volunteer tutors provide one-to-one tutoring or small group instruction (2-3 students) in English as a Second Language (ESL). We also help adult learners whose first language is English to improve their reading skills. Our learners are at all levels of English proficiency and have diverse needs, interests and goals. At present 375 volunteer tutors are helping 500 learners from many different countries. Our wonderful volunteer tutors are caring members of the community who help integrate our learners into an English-speaking world.

ESL Cook BookOur Best Recipes
A Legacy for Literacy was proud to publish its ESL Cookbook, Our Best Recipes.   +-
The cookbook includes 150 tasty international recipes that were provided by ESL tutors and learners in the program. Our popular potluck suppers, held twice a year in Druker Auditorium, inspired this fund-raising vehicle. Now we have the pleasure of sharing a “Recipe of the Month” from Our Best Recipes with our online visitors. Enjoy!

We are grateful to the Friends of the Library for their gracious support of the cookbook project.
