American Song is a history database containing 50,000 tracks, including songs by and about American Indians, miners, immigrants, slaves, children, pioneers, and cowboys. Included in the database are the songs of Civil Rights, political campaigns, Prohibition, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, anti-war protests and more.

Ancestry Library Edition*   (In Library Only)

Who are your ancestors? With access to more than three billion names, you might discover long-lost ancestors. This database includes U.S. Federal Census Records from 1790 through 1930, the Immigration Collection of New York, San Francisco Passenger Lists, New York Petitions for Naturalization and much more. Included are Massachusetts City Directories and City Directories for many other locations.

 

Asia-Studies Full-text Online*   Home Access | In Library Access

With access to reports, working paper series, and journals from top Asia-Pacific institutions and world research institutions, Asia-Studies covers business, economics, government, politics, and social sciences. The humanities section includes Asian languages, arts, culture, history and religion.

The 53 countries covered by the database include all of Asia from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Central Asian republics on east through India, Southeast Asia, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

This database combines award-winning biographies from respected Gale Group sources. Biography Resource Center also includes full-text articles from hundreds of periodicals.  Search for people based on one or more personal facts such as birth and death year, nationality, ethnicity, occupation or gender, or combine criteria to create a highly-targeted custom search.  Also included in this resource is the the Complete Marquis Who's Who.  This massive database contains more than 990,000 thumbnail biographies from 20 respected Marquis sources.  Also includes Contemporary Authors.

ConsumerLab* (In Library Only)

ConsumerLab.com provides comprehensive information about vitamin, herbal and other supplements, and nutritional products.  The site includes ConsumerLab.com's independent product evaluations, lists of quality-approved brands, product recalls, and safety warnings.  A science-based encyclopedia of natural products is also provided, including a drug-interaction database. ConsumerLab.com is not affiliated with manufacturers of health and nutrition products, and test samples used in product reviews are purchased independently.

 

Consumers' Checkbook (Boston)* (In Library Only)

Consumers' Checkbook is an independent, nonprofit consumer organization founded in 1974 with the help of funding from the U.S. Office of Consumer Affairs. They do not accept support from businesses, and their publications and website carry no advertising.

Both the website and the print version of Boston Consumers' Checkbook (available in the Periodicals area) evaluate the quality and prices of local service firms and stores, such as auto repair shops, plumbers, dentists, veterinarians, banks, insurance companies, and many more. Checkbook's special health guides provide you with critical ratings and reports on doctors, hospitals, and health plans. The site also provides various kinds of help to consumers who want to buy or lease a new car.

Hoover's Online* (Subscription Level In-Library Only)

Hoover's Online contains a wide variety of business information about public, private and non-U.S. companies, including extensive company profiles, information about competitors, and names and biographies of key people.  Also available is company and industry news, IPO information, research reports, and annual reports.  Company searches can be targeted using 18 parameters, including industry, location, financial information, company size, and company type.  Searches can also screen stocks by up to 20 different criteria.

While the Hoovers.com website is available anywhere, enhanced options are available in the Main Library and branches, where the premium features of Hoover's Pro subscription access are available.

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association* (In Library Only)

JAMA's online version provides searchable full text and abstracts for issues from January 1998 to the present. It also includes abstracts for issues January 1975 - December 1997, and table of contents for January 1966 - December 1974. Users can select "Collections" to view articles published in JAMA on various topics.

"Advanced Search" allows users to search multiple journals (over 300) in addition to JAMA.

LexisNexis Primary Sources in U.S. History allows access to African American Studies, US Presidential Studies and Women's Studies.  Search by keyword the full text of sources within LexisNexis Primary Sources in U.S. History.  Search by subject for sources using your own term or choose from the subject list and browse entire collections of documents.

Lit Finder  Home Access | In Library Access

Lit Finder's database includes five collections: Poems, Stories, Essays, Plays, and Speeches. These collections may be searched individually, as a group, or in any combination. 

Lit Finder's Poems collection is the largest, most comprehensive and most current poetry database available, containing over five million lines of poetry. It is international in scope, and covers poetry from antiquity to the present. Full representation is provided for significant periods such as Early English, Middle English, Elizabethan, Romantic, Victorian, 20th Century War Poetry and Modernism. Over 90,000 authors are included with key biographical data. Detailed explanations of more than 2,500 poems provide in-depth analysis. Morningstar provides financial data on over 7,000 stocks and 23,000 mutual funds, with independent reports on 2,000 stocks and 2,000 funds. Potential investors can plan investment strategies and monitor mutual funds, as well as research current or prospective holdings, find price performance records, and learn about fund portfolios and their management. Includes exclusive Morningstar Ratings. Updated frequently.

The New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS), founded in 1845, is the nation's oldest and largest genealogical society with a research library of over 200,000 volumes. If you have New England ancestors, or are interested in genealogical research of any kind, you will find that NEHGS is an important resource for helping you achieve your research goals.

Do you want to know what the weather was like on a particular day, in a specific city? This source has local climatalogical data--temperature, precipitation, wind, and more--for Boston and locations across the country. Daily information is available dating back to 1949, with annual summaries for earlier years.

NoveList  Home Access | In Library Access

NoveList is an electronic readers' advisory resource which assists fiction readers in finding new authors and titles.  Through its attractive and easy-to-use interface, NoveList allows readers to use a favorite author or title as a template to locate other authors and titles of interest.  Readers can also enter words that describe the contents of a book they would like to read, and NoveList retrieves titles that contain these words in the book's subject headings field.  In addition, users can browse over 1,200 theme-oriented book lists, 150 award lists and 1,000 fiction related web-sites.  NoveList contains materials for all ages including picture books, children's "chapter" books, young adult titles and books for adult readers. The product's database provides enhanced subject access to over 92,000 fiction titles.  Updated quarterly, the NoveList database integrates information from a variety of sources.

Mitchell's OnDemand5.com database has all the information you need to diagnose, service, repair, and maintain your automobile or light truck. Search for information on vehicles from 1974 to the present. Includes extensive wiring diagram information.

Search the Oxford English Dictionary online for the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past.

p4A Antiques Reference provides price and background information on antiques, collectibles, fine art, and historic Americana. Data is based on regional auctions throughout the United States. Users can search by item category, specific type of item within a category, geographic origin, keyword or date. Also included are links to auction houses and other auction-related links.

Access to over 100 full-text popular magazine publications from mainland China. Subjects include the arts, current events, business, health, children's literature and much more. Most titles viewable in both simplified and classical viewing styles. Coverage: 2005-present.

A Massachusetts library card is required for access. You may need to install a language pack to view Chinese characters; the database should prompt you if you need to do this.

 

Reference USA*   Home Access | In Library Access

Compiled and updated from over 5,000 publicly available sources and telephone verified, Reference USA contains detailed information on 13 million U.S. businesses.  Information provided includes addresses, phone numbers, website addresses, sales, number of employees, subsidiary information, and SEC filings of publicly traded companies.

Company searches can be limited by major industry group, annual sales volume, number of employees, and other criteria. The file is updated monthly.

Rosetta Stone*   Home Access | In Library Access

The languages included are English, French, German, Italian and Spanish (Latin American). 

Please note: Rosetta Stone is discontinuing public library access to their online products.  Newton's access expires 8/15/08.  For an alternative online language learning option please use Newton's subscription to eAudiobooks's Pimsleur language program.

Infotrac's Science Resource Center provides topic overviews, experiments, biographies, pictures and illustrations, as well as articles from over 200 magazines and academic journals and links to quality web sites.
