CONCERTO & CHAMBER MUSIC CALL NUMBERS
For Concertos, or concerti, take the basic number from the Genre List (785.6); select the
Dewey number from the Musical Instrument List (785); drop the first two numbers (78);
add the next two numbers. This will give you the first line. The second line generally
represents the composer's name, so once in a genre section you
can browse by composer.

For Chamber Music take the basic number from the Genre List. Look at the final number.
The final number will be 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9. This last number indicates the size of the
ensemble, e.g. duets, trios, quartets, quintets, sextets, septets, octets, nonets. The final two
numbers indicate the most important instrument in the ensemble according to a Dewey table
of precedence: strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion. If there is a violin in the ensemble
the Dewey number designating the violin takes precedence, even though the work may
be known as a piano trio. The subject heading, however, places the piano first if there is
one in the
ensemble, and then the remaining instruments are listed in alphabetical order.
Examples : Piano Trios, String Trios
and String Quartets
