The Newton Free Library now offers free wireless Internet service for your laptop while in the Main Library. Using your laptop or handheld device, you can browse the Internet. You will need is a wireless card installed in your laptop.
Most laptops are equipped with wireless network cards. However, if your laptop is not equipped with a card, a card can be purchased at a computer supplier. Purchase of the wireless equipment in use at the Newton Free Library was made possible through the generosity of donors to the Fall 2002 Library Lovers' Eve.
Hardware required: 802.11b standard Network interface card connected to your laptop, notebook, or handheld device. Note: This setup was tested with both Linksys and SMC cards that basically worked "right out of the box." If you should need to modify your hardware setup here are the particulars:
Software setup: If you use the same device to connect to the Internet from home then it will probably work in the Library as well. However, if you should need to modify your settings, make sure you take note of the original settings and then modify your TCP/IP setup for these settings:
Location: If you find the Internet slow or not working at all from your location in the Library, move closer to the center of the building. Make sure to shutdown your laptop, etc., before your move and restart it in your new location. Please inform a librarian exactly where in the building you were when you found the Internet slow or not working at all. Note: The City of Newton will take no responsibility for any damage caused to any device from configuration changes or software downloaded while accessing the Newton Free Library’s public Wireless Internet. Library staff will not configure or troubleshoot patron laptops. |
