MEMOIRS AND PERSONAL ACCOUNTS OF
FAMOUS AND NOT-SO-FAMOUS PEOPLE
Some
personal documents (autobiographies, diaries, memoirs, and letters) rank among
the world's greatest literature. A memoir is defined as a history or record
composed from personal observation and experience. Closely related to, and
often confused with, autobiography, a memoir usually
differs chiefly in the degree of emphasis placed on external events; whereas
writers of autobiography are concerned primarily with themselves as subject
matter, writers of memoir are usually persons who have played roles in, or have
been close observers of, historical events and whose main purpose is to
describe or interpret the events.
The following books and films are available at the Newton Free Library. The Newton Free Library, as well as the Minuteman Library Network, has many other memoirs and personal accounts written by famous and not-so-famous people. The listed Web sites will also assist you in finding helpful information. Ask a librarian, if you need help.
